Emma is the first AmeriCorps member here at First Witness. She recently graduated from the University of Minnesota Duluth with a degree in Environmental and Outdoor Education and a Certificate in Business Administration. She has always loved educating and working with children having worked at Laketrails Base Camp in Lake of the Woods MN, where she guided children of all backgrounds on 5-6 day canoe trips. During college she spent a semester abroad in Worcester, England where she furthered her understanding of educating people of diverse backgrounds.
She rediscovered her passion for working in nonprofits and social work this past summer when working as an AmeriCorps member at the Steve O’Neil Apartments (SONA) which provides local permanent supportive housing for families. While working there, her position was working in the summer day programing for kids age 6-18 where she helped plan activities and field trips for the kids. Throughout the summer she furthered her understanding of trauma, ACE’s and impacts of child abuse through her work as well as attending multiple conferences. Not wanting to leave the kids at SONA but also looking to learn more, she is now an AmeriCorps member at both SONA and First Witness for the full year. Her main role at First Witness will be working with the Safe and Strong Child© prevention program. Emma is looking forward to learning more about the field of social work and how to use her skills as an educator to help bring awareness to the Duluth Community about child abuse.
